It's that time of year again. Our annual trip to a family reunion. We've been doing this for years and this year it was in St. Louis. It always proves to be an awesome time catching up with family that we only see once a year. And while seeing these people are always so much fun, the time I cherish the most is the 5 hours spent in the car. 5 hours. Each way.

I know what you're thinking. 5 hours can't be that bad. I'm sure you had iPods, portable DVD players, cell phones for texting and all that, right? Wrong! This is 1999, folks. Nothing but an AM/FM radio, 4 grown siblings, 2 parents. All crammed in an '82 Chevy Caprise. 3 kids (ages 21, 20, and 19) smashed so close to each other in the backseat you had to sit sideways. The youngest, 14, in the front seat* sitting between Mom and Dad.

Photobucket

*I'm fairly certain that is not a safe seat to sit in, despite there being a seat belt.

No room for carry-ons or personal bags. Barely any room for snacks. Knees pressed up against the bench-style front seat and shoulders squeezed together so hard I could barely move my arms. Of course me, being the shortest, got stuck in the middle. You know, the dreaded middle seat. Slightly humped with the divider down by my feet. I know you know what I'm talking about.

So there you have it. 4 grown kids, Mom and Dad, driving down the lonely highway on a hot July day. Life was good.

Photobucket

Oh, but it can't be that good. We're the K's. We have this thing called "The K. Kurse." (K being our last name, but to protect those in this story, I will keep it abbreviated.) The K. Kurse delivers such things, particularly related to car trouble, like car air conditioners not working on a 100 degree day, review mirrors falling off and random bloody noses and log-sized splinters on what was supposed to be a quiet hike at Turkey Run.

Ah yes, The Kurse. Just ask anyone around us.

Maybe once, just once, The Kurse would be lifted. And so, the road trip started with picking up my 20 year old brother from a camp that he worked at that summer. He was a camp counselor to young kids at an awesome Christian summer camp that we happened to go to when we were kids. We picked him up and headed on down the road to St. Louis.

A short while into the trip, we smell something funky. It smells like, like.... dead bodies.... and rotten meat.... and sewage. My word, what IS that smell? Everyone's checking their shoes, their armpits, their pants. I think I'm about to puke. My sister is getting nauseus.

It's my brother's shoes. After spending the week at camp, wading through the creek and the woods, his shoes reeked of death. Not kidding. We put up with it for the next few hours, but the shoes didn't make it the whole way. It was imperative that they get thrown out. For the health and safety of others.

As we continued our drive, I reached for a can of pop to drink. Not just any old can of pop. Generic store brand red pop.

Bad idea. Me and food items that stain do not go together. Not to mention this can of pop was possessed. I swear. I'm not into things like The Exorcist or freaky devil stuff like that. But this can of pop was out of control. I did the ol' tap on the top to make sure the fizz went down. I carefully, slowly opened the pop top to let all the carbonation out.

Phew. We're good.

A few minutes later.... fizzing.... overflow. Red pop everywhere. It would not stop fizzing. Sucking the fizz and nearly choking on it, I was not fast enough. Luckily the car was a piece of junk* or I think I might've been kicked out of the car in the middle of nowhere.

*Sorry, Mom and Dad, it was a piece of junk.

My hands are sticky and the only thing I could think to do was to throw the can out the window. I'm not one for littering, but it was my only option. I think I even remember yelling at the pop to please stop fizzing. Pleading and praying didn't seem to work.

We finally reached St. Louis. As we pulled into the driveway of my uncle's house, my Dad noticed something leaking from the hood. Green antifreeze all over the driveway. Dad hitched a ride up to the auto store to get some AlumaSeal to temporarily fix the leak. Found it. Success. No more leaks.

After a fun-filled weekend of euchre and pinochle, we made our journey back to Indiana. Perhaps our Kurses were done for the weekend.

One rule you should know by now if you're a "K" kid.... Don't fall asleep in the presence of your siblings. HUGE no-no! My older brother decided to chance it. With the old school discman playing his favorite tunes, he dozed off in the warm summer sun.

No, J, you shouldn't have. With his head lay back and his arms folded nicely, my sister, E, and I conveniently placed twizzlers and granola bars in his hand and took blackmale pictures. (Mind you, this was back in the day when we didn't have digital cameras, so the pictures were good ol' 35 mm prints.)

Photobucket

We snatched the snacks back up after taking the pictures so he would have no clue of our mischieveous activity. Upon his awakening, we giggle to the side as to not let on what we did while he napped.

"Hey sis," he calls out. "Can you hand me a granola bar?"

In as serious a tone as I can muster, "I think you've had enough, mister."

E can't hold it in any longer and bursts into tears and laughter. It wasn't until a week later after the pictures were developed that he knew what took place during that fateful nap. Your fault, J, your fault.

Never again, he vowed.

As we reach our final destination - home - we are thankful to be there. While the trip was fun, we laughed, we sang, we told stories, we were so glad to be out of the car and into our own beds. But I couldn't leave you with a happy ending. No, siree, that's not how we roll. The Kurse was not done wrecking havoc on our family.

As we pull into the driveway - literally, as my Dad turns the car into the drive - he hears a funny sound. He turns the car off, gets out, starts to walk to the front....

KA-BOOM!!

Opens the hood and there's antifreeze spraying everywhere. Green, hot antifreeze. He slams the hood shut, thanks God we made it home safely, and shrugs it off as just another run of our "K. Kurse."

  1. My most memorable holiday road trip was traveling to Houston for Christmas to meet my mom's boyfriend's family when I was about 12. It was incredibly awkward. First of all there were cultural differences (the family was Filipino), then it was just weird for me to watch them have their Christmas while I was the outsider. After that trip my mother broke up with the guy, because she realized she liked his family more than she liked him!

  3. My best holiday road trip story is when we went Christmas shopping, and for some reason, paid no attention to the weather forecast for the day. When we walked out of the mall later that afternoon, it had snowed several inches and counting! The problem was that we were two hours from home and when it snows here in Missouri, that's a big deal. It took us a few hours just to get out of the parking lot, and the 2 hour trip home ended up being 6 hours long. My poor Mom had to drive 30 mph on the snowy highway with my young brother and me in the backseat! Thankfully we made it home safe and sound, but it was scary at the time. Now we can look back and laugh at how clueless we were to the snow forecast that day!

  4. My most memorable holiday road trip….when I was little we never spent holidays with grandparents. Just couldnt with dad’s job. But one year, we somehow could do it. We were going on road trip and we had to bring all our gifts to open on christmas morning. Dad’s truck was so full he couldn’t see! We had a camper on the back….stuffed!!! My grandparents laughed so hard when they saw us. Memorable though!!

  5. Let me tell you all about the "Graham Curse" and traveling!! It all started back when my relatives came from Ireland and the boat SANK just as they got to NY! They lost all of their luggage and the curse has continued from generation to generation!! So the night before our holiday road trip the curse got busy! We lost all power (and it was out for three days on), meaning I had to pack in the dark!

On the trip I realized I didn't have light colored undies to wear under my new yellow dress so I went comando. What the heck, I was in Mexcio for the holidays! At dinner my grandma says to my mom, is Candy wearing any underwear? My mom looks and says, nope! Here, you could see ALL through my dress and I didn't know it!!!! So I guess that explains why all the photographers wanted to stop me and get my picture saying, "You look goregous!"

Oh and the curse does not discriminate, it attacked my boyfriend at the time. He lost his brand new digital camera and his credit card!!

  6. We got snowed in last Christmas and had to spend an unplanned day at my sisters. It was so fun making a big waffle breakfast and playing Nintendo until the snow finally stopped and we could dig out the cars. :)

  7. I would have to say that the funniest road trip story...well, not to my sister...was when were coming back from my aunt and uncle's one Christmas. We had just stopped to go the bathroom and my sis' didn't need to go. Of course, it was an ongoing joke that we were ALWAYS having to stop because one of us had to go the bathroom. Anyway, she was probably about 9, at the time.

About 10 minutes after our original stop, she mentioned that she really needed to go. Oh for the love, sister! Are you kidding me? We JUST stopped.

Well, low and behold we were on a stretch of the trip where there was NOTHING in site. We drove and drove and seriously thought that my sister was going to have an accident. Just before that happened, we saw a sign for a town called Hamburg. Mind you...still could see NOTHING from the exit. Oh, wait...I think there is a sign and it read "Pizza Hut 9 miles." Those were the LONGEST 9 miles ever, but we finally made it to let my sis go.

It doesn't sound like that funny of a story, but every time we drive through the town of Hamburg...we are reminded of that one road trip!

  8. My most memorable Christmas was the year that my mom and step-dad got married. Between the two of them there were 5 children and thus we had huge extended family Christmas. Any way, on the way to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house my step-dad decided to turn on some Christmas music in the vehicle. Of course the only station he could tune in was one playing newer songs, and so on the 2 1/2 hour trip to their house we heard the “Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer” song about 3 times. Needless to say all 5 of us kids remembered those exact words from that song and only those words. So, when we finally arrived at the grandparents house we were eager to recite some “carols” for them in true Christmas fashion. Our parents were mortified to hear that the first song of our choice was the “Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer” one which we sang over and over again and only that line. Thank goodness Grandma just thought that that was hilarious and laughed it off.

  9. We travel every year and stay with my in-laws for about a week after Christmas. Christmas day, we visit 2 or 4 family Christmas parties. One year, we didn't get very far...ok, we didn't get out of the driveway, before we got my wife's car buried in a 3 foot snow drift. It took an hour to dig it out. Needless to say, the rest of the day was quite stressful for me because of the way it started.

  10. My most memorable holiday road trip was from Texas to North Carolina with our son when he was just a month old. We never imagined that you would have to take so much stuff for a baby! We had to stop every hour or so because I was breastfeeding and to feed him we had to take him out of the car seat. To top it all off it snowed and we had to drive in a blizzard! What a trip!

  11. Oh my gosh my story sounds just like yours that is crazy! We would have our annual family vacation for my birthday each year which always seemed to count as my present. I was never happy about this because I had an older brother and sister so why couldnt they have it be there present I didnt want to share my present but we werent all that wealthy so it was a deal with it and be happy! So we were on our way to Florida to which is a very very long drive when you have my Brother and Sister and Grandma all in the backseat and me my mom and dad in the front.(and yeah I dont think thiis was safe but thats how it was back then) I am not sure the model of the car we had but my dad was going through some kind of low rider faze and it was suppper lonng brown two door car and so ugly I hated driving in that thing! So we are driving along down the highway and my brother starts to say he is getting car sick and my parents believe he is just trying to get out of sitting in the back seat so my dad just keeps on driving. All of the sudden here it comes you know its about to happen and there aint nothing you can do about it 2door car so no window and next thing you know my grandma and sister are splattered with vomit and the odor was horrid so we had to pull over on the highway and try to clean up but there was no hope it stunk soooo bad needless to say I went back to the stinky back seat he went up front and my sister and grandma had to change! We still make fun of my brother to this day!

  13. My eventful holiday road trip was a road trip to Disney World, Florida from Louisiana with three small kids. Just know, that we stopped a lot for bathroom time. It was a long 10 hour trip that we settled for flying the next time we take a trip there.

  15. Hubby and I decided to visit some friends that were going to be a couple states away one Friday night. We were excited about it since we hadn't seen them for a while, but through the course of driving there and the anticipation of having a very short amount of time with them, I developed a pounding migraine. We also had to drive home that same night. As we got in the car after our visit, I wasn't sure how I was going to make it without *ahem* tossing my cookies. Thankfully as hubby drove, I was able to nod off for a bit which definitely took the edge of the headache. Once I woke up, it was just in time for us to keep each other awake for the last couple hours of the drive home! joyful.too at gmail dot com

  16. I don't know that this is very funny but when I was 3 my family took a road trip to visit some friends in Georgia. I was feeling sick and kept telling my mom that I didn't feel good. No one believed me. Until I puked all over the floor. Probably not very funny for my parents since they had to clean it up.

Later that week on the same trip I fell out of the car on the way home from the pool. We had four people in the back seat and they couldn't get my buckle to work. We were only driving a block or so and my mom didn't think it was that big of a deal. Until I opened the door and fell out.

  17. We did the ultimate road trip in college. A friend won an RV rental for a weekend, so we stuffed around 15 college kids into this thing & drove out to a campsite...on the way there, we stopped for rootbear floats at A&W...SHould have seen the other customers expression when we pulled up!
We had such a great time, playing card games in the RV all the way to our camping site.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
    & crossing fingers to win!

  18. My funniest road trip story was when I was younger my family and I lived in the Midwest and traveled to CT to visit family one summer. The family we were visiting thought it would be funny to leave seafood tucked away under the seat before we left. The whole drive home everyone was blaming everyone for the smell. We searched and searched but they hid it well. Eventually we decided it must just be in the carpet. It was a few days after we got home that it was finally discovered! Funny for them.... :)

  19. My most eventful road trip has to be when we drove 23 straight hours with a 5 year old, a 3 year old, and a newborn. Through the mountains, in snow. Needless to say, there was something new to conquer every 20 minutes or so! Never again, I swear! It wasn't funny at the time, but we laugh now. Especially the part where the newborn's diaper blew up and we really didn't have a good way to clean the car seat except with a bazillion baby wipes....

  21. No Holiday road trip craziness for me, but ther was that one time back in high school, on a summer mission trip, when driving through Red Rocks State Park, our trailer broke in half just after we rounded a corner that could've seen all of our luggage falling over a cliff...
Amazing thing- my mother's uncle was a welder, and lived a few minutes away (this was a group of kids form Minnesota, we were in Colorado at this point on our trip) and fixed the trailer up in an hour or two! Amazing, anywhere else, any other time, what would we have done...???

  25. Awesome giveaway! I meant to join your last one but...well, life happened and it was not a good day around here. Moving on though...

As a child my family lived in Nigeria and we also traveled north during the holidays. Well, we always got stopped at immigration points, sometimes they waved us through, other times they would want a bribe or to talk to us because we were white...well one time we had been at a checkpoint for *hours* and they didn't want to let us go because they said we didn't have some traveling papers we needed (they were always making up stuff that they claimed we needed) but my Dad refused to bribe them so we sat there forever! Well, one of the other missionary ladies decided to put on a big act and so she started crying, groveling at the guys feet, begging them to let us go and not hold us any longer...the men were so shocked at her out burst that they let us go immediately. We still laugh at it now. We have some pretty great memories from there but this one is one of the top!

  26. I am the oldest of 5 kids and my parents set out on the long trip from IL to FL. We had planned to go halfway and spend the night in a hotel. We were about 10 minutes into the trip when my youngest brother spied an industrial building and called out "Is that our hotel?" I can only imagine what my parents must have been thinking -wondering what they had gotten themselves into taking on such a long road trip.

  27. My most memorable road trip had to be driving to Arizona to see my grandpa. We always drove through the night so I usually just slept in the back seat. Well one year I woke up to a bunch of shaking. My dad had fallen asleep at the wheel and went into the middle part of the freeway ( It's just dirt and gravel luckily no cement wall!!). It's not really funny at all and I still count my blesssing to this day that we were all OK but man I sure will never forget it!

  28. Does going to get our Christmas tree count? If so (and I hope it does) it was our first year in our house together and I really wanted a live tree. My husband had a really beat up truck at the time, that didn't run very well but we decided to take it anyway-there was no way a tree was going to fit on our Neon.
On the way there the truck stalled three times-and we only went about 7 miles. When we got there the actual tree farm was huge. But we searched and searched until we finally found the perfect tree (using a tape measure, arms width, checking the needles, etc) and had to cut it ourselves. This entire process was about an hour long.
We finally dragged the tree out of the thick only to realize we went the wrong way. It was like a Where's Waldo but with the truck (I claim, to this day, that someone moved the truck on us!)
Anyway, we finally found the truck, lassoed the tree on top and were on our way. Somewhere between the tree farm and the first stop sign, about four miles down the road, we realized we had lost the tree!!! So we had to double back and search for it.
This really turned out to be a comedy of errors road trip.
We did finally make it home, with the tree. And you'd have thought we'd have learned our lesson about getting a real tree, but no, I still love them and the adventure they bring.

  29. our craziest road trip was when my sister took over a car trip when she and my mom and brother were moving me up to school and instead of taking us to my college accidentally drove us back home because she everyone was asleep and she was too proud to use GPS. not funny then but hilarious now! :)

  32. My most memorable holiday trip wwas one where my dad had decided to take us ice skating and sledding on the property he owned out in the middle of nowhere on the side of a mountain. We took two cars--an old minivan with no snow tires, and my dad's new Jeep. The access road is on the side of a mountain, crosses a bridge, and is frozen solid from October-March every year. We got about 50 feet down the road when the van started skidding. We were on a sheet of solid ice, and the van jacknifed. We were skidding sideways down the mountain, and we were right along the edge of an embankment. It was a straight drop down into the creek, with nothing but a few trees to break the fall. All the kids were crying, my mom was panicking and yelling at us to be quiet, and my dad was standing at the top of the road yelling for her to let off the brakes and steer. The car eventually stopped when a tire hit a rock, and my mom had everyone crawl out the front passenger door (she didn't want us below the car, in case it should begin sliding downhill again.)

We got out and stood on the ice, and my dad hooked the front of the van to his jeep and tried to striaghten it out. He got about halfway there, and the cable broke. The van ended up over the cliff and in the creek! No one was hurt, thank god, but what a day!

Trying to get down the hill in kiddie snowboats was yet another challenge. I was a chubby kid and not exactly a graceful one; I landed on my bottom every 3 steps! I eventually got frustrated and crawled down the rest of the road on my hands and knees. There are pictures of me crawling aross the ice that I still--more than 15 years later--have not lived down!

We did end up having a blast snowtubing/sledding down the mountains for a few hours while waiting for a tow truck. We even made a campfire and had hot cocoa (from melted snow!) and toasted marhsmallows. It was one of the best, scariest, and most memorable holidays of my life. Definitely one the grandkids will be hearing about someday!

  34. We had a crazy 15 hour road trip back from my brother's wedding. Our daughter was two and potty training. She had to stop every two hours to go to the bathrooms. We stopped whenever there were bathrooms and sometimes (especially driving through the expanse of Texas) those places weren't all that clean. We stopped at one especially dingy gas station and on our way out the door, something caught our daughter's eye. It was a big ice cream cone painted on the dingy counter. She walked right over there and before we knew what she was doing, she started licking that filthy store counter. What memories!

  35. We never had to travel much because our family lives so close. I will never forget the car rides home from church on Christmas Eve though. We always knew that Santa had come while we were at church and we'd have presents waiting for us. My brother and I would crane our necks looking out the window for his sleigh and always swore to each other that we could hear the sleigh bells. I still don't know how my Grandpa managed to get those presents set up while we were on our way home from church but, he always did it!

  36. Love the "middle seat" comment-- I used to fight with my cousins about who got to ride front and center in my grandparents old Buick... NICE!

Funny road trip story... my parents & I took a cross country road trip from Ohio to California (3 weeks in a car with my parents) when I was 10. As an only child, I got bored quite a bit... and ended up making a doll out of McDonald's french fry containers. I was *not* that dorky :)

  37. I'm loving reading everyone's road trip stories!

I don't know if I have an exact holiday road trip story, but as a kid we had many many road trips to visit my grandmother. One always comes to mind:

We had these railroad-tie things lining our driveway and I use to love using them like a balance beam. Until of course, I fell off of one and hit my head on the driveway the morning of our 4 hour drive to grandma's. I was probably four or five at the time, and remember throwing up the whole way there. Looking back, I'm pretty sure I had a concussion. My sister and I pick on my parents to this day for continuing on with the trip, and of course joke that THAT is what happened to me! LOL

  39. My most memorable road trip was one year after I was married and it snowed quite a bit overnight. The next morning my dear husband had to take the children and I over to his mom's in shifts becuase only four wheel drive would make it out of our road and we couldn't all fit in the jeep! Talk about a pain, but we all ended up together and with family on Christmas! It was worth it.

  40. My most memorable holiday road trip was when I was 35 weeks pregnant with our first son, Austin. I was less than a week away from the "travel cutoff" that most doctors will tell you to stop traveling.

My husband is in the Army and we were stationed at Fort Campbell, KY. His parents live in Little Rock, Arkansas. It took about 6 hours to get from our house to theirs, so we didn't think it would be too bad of a trip. Well, until you factor in the freezing rain we were getting right before we were ready to leave. We went ahead and left since we knew we wouldn't be heading that way for a while after the baby was born.

We made pretty good time to Memphis, but just as we hit Memphis, it started icing/snowing really hard. We hit completely STOPPED traffic right inside Arkansas after driving over the bridge from Memphis. We got off the interstate since I had to use the bathroom and ended up taking a country road to try and bypass the traffic.

This was a BAD idea. We passed a few cars that were in the ditch, facing the opposite direction and asked each other how on Earth they got that way! We found out about 5 minutes later. We hit a patch of black ice and ended up EXACTLY how all those other cars had been! Luckily, someone stopped and helped push us back up on the road (while I drove) and we were back on the road. Both good smaraitans and Brian (my husband) were covered in mud!

We found our way back to the interstate and proceeded to drive the rest of the way to Little Rock, going 15-20 miles an hour on the interstate!

It took us 7 1/2 hours to drive what would have been 2 1/2. It was the most nerve-wracking drive I had ever taken...our family thought for sure I would go into labor while on the drive! Or, at least once we got to Little Rock!

On the way back home later that weekend, we saw all the same cars and tractor trailers on the side of the interstate that we saw on the way there. We knew that if we stopped that night we would have never made it to Little Rock. It was a great Christmas...and a drive I'll never forget!

Funny thing is that our second son, Colten, was born at the beginning of this year, in the worst ice storm Arkansas has seen in a LONG time. We were without power for a few days and ended up "going home" to a hotel since we didn't have heat. So, both of them will be able to hear about their own "ice stories."

  41. 2 years ago, my inlaws payed for our vacation to go to be with the in new york for Christmas. since we are a family of 8, they bought us stand by tickets from a relative that works for the airline.
well we took 3 days to pack and like always a couple of hours before we had to be at the airport, everyone remembered they were missing important things that were unpacked without me knowing.
2 hr countdown begins, everyone is screaming to everyone else, looking for things, i cant find my camera that keeps dissapearing out of my purse, and coats are missing. the 9 and 7 yr old girls vote they dont need coats, "hello!!! we are going where there's snow!!!" so 2 hrs later everyone is getting last minute things to put in their carry on bags for the flight entertainment. husb decides its time to check all the fluids in the car. i scream at him and remind him were flying to new york from california, not driving!!! so we make it to the airport late, as always, not to mention that it took us an hour to find a free extended stay parking lot for military, we made it to the desk and we get lectured that since we have stand by tickets we should have been there 2 hours earlier. really!?!?! after all of the bags are weighed we shifted some items around from bag to bag because some bags were over the weight limit and some were way under.
our bags finally get through that ordeal, time to go through security check point.
i strongly believe there should be a line for mommys and kids, keep in mind i have a lot of little kids to help take shoes off and coats and empty pockets and open carry on bags for. people behind us complain loudly about how long its taking, mind u im rushing the whole time flippin kids on bottom and pulling out shoes faster than i can throw them. we finally go one by one through the metal detector thingy, then security gets called to the x ray machine. seems our 5 year old thought it was a great idea to bring his metal cap gun with him in case someone tries to steal the airplane while were on it. many many explanations and apologies later, we are allowed to go through. so obviously we missed the flight we wanted so we had to wait for the next one. omg in a packed holiday airport with a bunch of hyper kids!!!!!!!!!!

  42. part 2 of 2
we kept making bathroom trips because they clamied to "have" to go, but i know that its because for some unknown reason my kids are fascinated with going in public bathrooms! yuk!!
people would keep staring from all angles at how many we were, and i would hear the remarks and laughs when i would count"1,2,3,4,5,6" ok were all here lets go!"
next flight was readt to take in some stand by flyers, we had choices of sending some of us ahead or waiting for another flight or seperating us all throughout the plane. who in their right mind suggests i let a 2 and 4 year old sit together without a parent near by?!??! kids would come up with new snacks constantly, and i would get answers like "that stranger gave it to me" or "a man said it was ok to have candy" or "that guy with the coat called me over and gave it to me" so more crying from me feeling like i failed as a parent because all of my kids were getting food from strangers. i could have lost 1 or 2 or 3 kids that night. i had many older couples smile and pat our kids on the heads, telling us it would be okay, and that they had been through that many years ago. i was just a ball of tears that night. we finally got a whole row for ourselves and we played hand games, patty cake, rock paper sicssors, made up jokes and stories. we had a lot of fun. after a lot of planning, a lot more praying, plenty of crying, from me, not the kids, after 6 hours, we finally all were able to board the plane, as long as daddy took half of the little ones and i took the other half on different ends of the plane. we then sat on the plane for 3 hours because we didnt have clearance to leave since new york was having snow, go figure!
so me and the kids decided to play phone games by calling daddy and the group, we were playing "guess who" and i spy back and forth with our cells phones.
finally we got the notice and we were off!

this was such a hectic and hard time, but it gave us memories for a lifetime, it has been the most adventourus and fun trip we have had, exept for the flight home where we split up into 3 flight,s but thats another one, lol

  43. We drove, one Christmas Day, from Nashville to Tampa. I was about 13, I think. My brothers, twins, were 10. My step-sisters- 14 & 12. Dad & Step-mom. In an old Ford minivan. We were going to be there for a week- now, while the vans are 7-passenger, they are NOT 7-people's 7 days of luggage friendly! So, us, and our stuff, packed in like sardines, road tripping. On Christmas Day. Bah Humbug!

  44. I think my most memorable holiday trip is a toss up between the time my parents, little sister, and me spent Christmas in Paris (cue the Anastasia music right after she exclaims "Can you imagine? Christmas in Paris!") and the time we went to Tahoe, there was a huge spontaneous blizzard, and we were forced to camp down in a small hotel in the middle of nowhere for a week or so.

I remember I got a gorgeous green taffeta dress in Paris. But I got to miss school and had bragging rights for being in a blizzard...

So, like I said, toss up!

  46. My first holiday trip with my husband (then boyfriend) we went to my timeshare in Florida. I set the whole trip up and when we picked up the rental car he asked me, "ok, which way do I go?". I just about died! I didn't know and I never thought to print off directions. We just decided to "wing-it" and I said if I could find the big bridge I could get us there. There are a lot of big bridges in West Palm Beach but we eventually found it and made it there. He never got iritated with me and we laughed it off. That was my most memerable trip and the day I knew I wanted to marry him!

  47. My most memorable road trip was when my husband and I went to Michigan- it was an 8 hour trip. I had to pee very badly and we got stuck in traffic for over 2 hours! I ended up with a really bad bladder infection and was miserable the entire trip. On the way home, we got stuck in the same traffic--I ended up peeing in a thermos while we were driving, I couldn't hold it!
My husband still makes fun of me for this to this day.

  50. My most memorable holiday road trip was when we lived in Seattle and my grandmother lived in Texas. We went to visit her at Christmas and we got to take the train!! I had never been on a train before and it was so wonderful. I had a great time exploring the cars, eating in the dining car, looking at the scenery out the window, climbing on the sleeping berths. The train trip itself was like a Christmas gift to me.

Thankfully it wasn't the direct Holiday and places were open. We were back on our way!! It isn't that Extreme, but we never did a lot of traveling and I'm only 19, so I don't have many stories yet!!

  54. Imagine driving what's supposed to be about a 7 hr trip with 4 month old quadruplets....... It turned into a 9 hour drive btwn the MULTIPLE diaper changes, stopping to feed bottles,( 2 babies had bad reflux so you can only imagine the baby puke....) checking on the kids since they were rear facing and i'm a first time mom. It was a crazy trip. But they are great travelers now at 2.5 yrs. We're starting potty training now so i'm SURE we'll have some fun traveling times ahead!

Lets see... my most memorable road trip story would have to be every summer and every christmas when I would go to Las Vegas to see my dad. He would come get me from Utah where I lived with my mom, and everytime when we got close to Las Vegas, we would bet to see who could see the lights of the city first. He would give me a dollar if it was me who saw it first, most of the time, he would let me see the sparkling lights of Las Vegas first! I was Sooooo excited to get that dollar. He is such a sweet Man... :)

  61. When I graduated from Boot Camp in the USMC I was so ready to get out of Paris Island South Carolina. I was walking on egg shells. No one thought I would actually graduate. I didn't think I would make it either.

My family greeted me on graduation day with a diet coke and a snickers. It was a feast for someone who spent 3 months without anything slightly edible. Then we were gone. We stopped by Disney World on the way back home to Texas. It was just me, my parents, and Joey. Joey was my younger brother who is now in The Marine Corps.

I paid for everything seeing how I had three months of paydays saved up. We had a blast. We stopped by the beach.

We got home for Christmas. We live in a really small town. Most people are born there, grow up there, and end up spending their whole lives there. So when I came home the treated me like a hero. My whole family was there. I didn't feel like a hero but everyone seemed so proud that I made it.

It was a special Christmas. I was never so happy to see home. It is hard to believe that was 11 years ago. Now it is almost impossible to get everyone back together for the holidays. I will never forget the holiday I came back from boot camp;-)

  64. My friends and I decided to take a road trip from OK to Dallas and since none of us ever drove there before we got a GPS system to guide us. Little did we know that when we stopped to re-fuel a car we also had to enter our destination again. Our GPS didnt reroute for us and a pleasant lady's voice instructed us to "keep going straight". After about an hour of driving straight we suspected something might be wrong. We consulted a map instead of listening to GPS and found out we were going east the whole time - instead of going south. We almost ended up by the Arkansas border and a trip that was supposed to take 5 hours took nearly 8!!! Thanks GPS!

  65. The most memorable holiday story was when we went to Costa Rica for Christmas. Well because of ticket prices, we decided to come back before New Years. We live in a small town and hve to fly out of Charlotte. SO we got in and we had parked out car at the airport. When we got in there was a storm. We had no idea how bad it would get so we had planned to drive home but couldn't. We found a hotel and had to spend New Years eating dinner at the hotel restaurant. It was a hodge podge of travelers and businessmen and locas who had no where else to go. It was really fun because we all celebrated together in a snow storm.

I blogged my story in 3 parts here: http://www.harvestofdailylife.com/adventures-of-traveling-the-pacific-co...

Basically we had one issue after the next. Arriving at the camp site after dark, not getting the tent or fire going easily, bringing left over smores in the tent, a bear coming in after the smores…

Rescuing a motorcyclist hanging from a cliff on the way home, draining a tuna can out the car window while driving… All our trips are especially memorable because of murphy’s law. Everything that can go wrong certainly does with us. Makes for fun stories though.

Needless to say we were stuck out there for a few hours until a motorist called the police, who called AAA and towed us to the nearest town. I got the worst sunburn of my life and had to say goodbye to the car that day. At least a friend of mine was willing to come pick us up and take us to Phoenix after all!

  75. We once tried to set out for my parents' house, 300 miles away, in a big snowstorm. With my 1 year old son in the back seat. We figured if we could just make it to northern Virginia, we'd be out of the weather. That was dumb.

We didn't even make it down our driveway! We lived on top of a mountain (still do, but a different mountain) and the driveway was very long and curvy. We slid off the edge of the second curve, had to walk back up to the top of the hill lugging the little one and our suitcases. Sad Christmas, that year. Missed my folks. That was one long trip, huh? Thankfully, we are older and wiser now, and would never attempt such a thing.

  80. A few years ago we went to visit my brother for Chanukah. They live about 5 hours from us. The trip to them was rather uneventful. The trip home, well it was interesting to say the least. The trip took us 7 hours! We started off and almost immediately realized that we had to get gas for the car. So we stopped at the first rest area to tank it up. While there we heard a rumble coming from the back seat. My then 7 month old son filled up his diaper. Oy! I took him out and noticed he was a little wet. Sure, you betcha. . . diaper blow out. I managed to find a place to change him amid screams and protests of new clothing. We get back on the road and my newly potty trained older son proclaims that he needs to GO! So he chants this the entire way to the next stop. We get there and he refuses to go. He gets inside howls about the blowers in the bathroom and comes back out. We start back up...about 10 minutes later my son says he needs to go potty again. This time I take him in and he says he does not have to go, but is hungry. I take him back to the car for snacks. We go back on the road. Suddenly we realize a pattern. Each time my oldest sees restaurant signs on the highway = a request for a potty break. By the time we were almost home my parents called us. Hubby and I were in hysterics. We could not stop laughing because we must have made at least 6 pit stops for potty, eating, nursing and diapers.

  81. I used to live in Hawaii. My Step Brother was a surfer. He wanted to go surfing at Waipio Valley on Christms day, so off we went. To get into the valley, the road is so steep that you must have a 4 wheel drive to make it. Once you get into the valley, the road is basically nothing more than dirt roads throughout. We headed towards the beach, set up camp & were awoken at about 2am with a huge storm moving in. We decided to pack up and get out while we could. However, the dirt road that we followed to the beach was now turning into a river from the heavy rains. We pursued on any way until we got stuck in a large pool of water. We were stuck for awhile and the car was fairly submerged and we were soaked. Eventually a large tour vehicle came by and towed us out. We made it up the steep road and then we made it about 1 mile outside of Kailua and our vehicle completed shut down. I guess all that water from being stuck in the river messed with the electrical system and caused the car to just die. It is amazing that we made it as far as we did. At the time none of this was very funny, but now that I look back it is Hillarous.

  83. My favorite was traveling to a family members farewell (we're LDS, and a farewell is when someone leaves on a mission and stands up in church to talk) So we're there with our kids, and my daughter is jumping all over the seats, bothering the people behind us - just generally NOT wanting to sit down & be quiet. So finally after she smacks her sister in the face, I grab her, sit her down roughly & tell her "THAT'S ENOUGH!" There's a pause in the talk, so the chapel is quiet and she decided to say (super loudly, so everyone there could hear) "OW MOM, STOP HURTING ME, THAT REALLY HURT - I'LL BE A GOOD GIRL BUT DON'T HIT ME AGAIN"
Needless to say I slunk down in my seat & turned bright red!

  84. My most memorable holiday road trip took place about 20 years ago. I was driving back to college after spending the holidays with my family. About 8 hours into the drive we stopped in at a gas station and I accidentally left my wallet in the bathroom. It had a lot of cash from gifts and the check for next quarter's tuition!! I didn't realize what I'd done until I was back at my apartment 3 hours later. I panicked and called every gas station in the town where we'd stopped. Of course, the wallet was no where to be found. To my amazement, I got a call in the morning from someone saying they'd found my wallet (they used my drivers license to look me up in the phonebook). Even more amazing was that they were just about a mile from my apartment. When I went to pick it up, everything was still in my wallet. To this day I cannot explain how my wallet got back to me! The people that found it sure had good Xmas spirit to track me down and return it. I will never forget it!

  85. Well, since this happened on Thanksgiving Day 2001, I suppose it would be considered a holiday road trip. We were actually moving from Minnesota to Tennessee for my husband's job change. Unfortunately, we didn't even make it out of our small, rural Minnesota town before having to stop and delay for several hours. The reason? Someone forgot and left the emergency brake "engaged" on our manual transmission pick-up which was being towed by the U-Haul. Had to get two new tires... after finding someone to help us on Thanksgiving day in a town of 3,000. :)

  88. For me, it was on a business trip I took that took me and my coworkers to Las Vegas. I'd just bought some new luggage, and I picked it out in a light purple color so that it'd be easily distinguishable from the mass of black luggages on the carousel. We were standing in line at the luggage carousel and I was keeping a watchful eye out for my purple suitcase. Some of my coworkers were making fun of me because it was so bright that they asked how could I possibly miss it? About that time, I saw it pop over the carousel at the other end. Relief! But I didn't see it come around the bend. I kept looking, waiting, watching. No sign. I decided to go toward the other end and as I walked down that way, I saw my luggage being pulled away...by a little girl! Evidently she had the exact same suitcase as me (in the light purple shade!) and thought this was hers. Thankfully I caught up with her and her chaperon to correct the discrepancy but could you imagine--being stuck with a 10 year old's suitcase of clothes?!

  89. One of my most memorable road trips would have to be from this year. We headed out of state to visit family and it is a 4 hour drive. Our two small boys had been sick with a stomach bug and after they started to feel better, we got on the road. Once we arrived at my parent’s home, everyone started to get sick. It hit me a day later and I can’t recall ever being that sick. All in all, 16 family members ended up getting sick. What a Christmas to remember. The ride home was uneventful though and the boys slept the entire way, they were so tired!

  90. I'm not sure if this is funny, it certainly didn't seem that way at the time, but it was memorable. My most memorable holiday road trip was a trip back to college after Christmas break. My mother decided she didn’t want me making the 7 hour trip alone, so she would drive with me and fly back home. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Unfortunately my mom came down with food poisoning about 2 hours into the trip, and I had to drive the entire rest of the way, stopping every 30 minutes so she could vomit or use the bathroom. It took forever, and she was miserable. It has been over 20 years and we still joke about that nightmare road trip. After that she always let me drive by myself, and never offered to come “help” again.

We had an early Christmas at Grandma's & left Christmas Eve day. Crammed into this vehicle with boxes of stuff(and a rocking chair tied to the top, can you say Beverly Hillbillies?) was 6 people, including a newborn and a chihuahua puppy.
The truly hilarious part was the startled looks on the faces of the holiday travelers when they saw 3 little faces peering at them from the back windows of an AMBULANCE on the interstate on Christmas Eve.

  104. We had a memorable road trip to San Antonio Sea World last Independence Day. It was my baby's first long trip in a car, but to my delight, he didn't give me any hard time at all. At my husband's request, I started telling stories to keep him awake while driving. Funnily but not surprisingly, my baby fell fast asleep while hearing my stories:P

  105. I have a crazy road trip story! My friend had just found out that his father was getting married the next day to a woman he had met a few weeks ago online (but never in person!). The first time the couple would see each other was at their wedding! My friend wanted desperately to try to get to his father and talk him out of what he thought was a bad idea so we drove all night to try to "stop the wedding", like they do in movies! Our trip was ridiculous, exhilarating, but serious at the same time. We got there too late though! (The woman later ran off with all of the husband's money and it wasn't her first time doing this to someone!)
